Centro Storico (Piazza delle Erbe & Piazza dei Signori)
The Roman forum and the medieval government quarter, one arch apart. Frescoed palace facades, a market square that has been a market square for two thousand years, and the densest concentration of Verona's sights inside a ten-minute walk.
Who it's for: First-time visitors, day-trippers from Venice with one day to spend, anyone who wants to see the whole of Verona's historic core on foot without transport.
Things to know
- The cafe terraces on Piazza delle Erbe carry a heavy location premium. Walking one street back — Corso Porta Borsari, Via Rosa, Via Sottoriva — roughly halves the bill for better food.
- Casa di Giulietta now requires an online booking even for the courtyard alone and even for VeronaCard holders. Since 1 April 2026 the entrance is at the Teatro Nuovo on Piazzetta Navona, not on Via Cappello.
- Santa Anastasia, the Duomo complex, San Fermo and San Zeno share the Chiese Vive combined ticket. No price is published online — buy at the first church you enter; it pays off from the second onward.
- The Torre dei Lamberti's entrance and ticket desk are on Piazza dei Signori, not Piazza delle Erbe. VeronaCard holders climb the stairs free but pay €1 for the lift.
- Watch closing days: Osteria Sottoriva shuts Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday; al Duca and al Pompiere shut Sunday; Palazzo Maffei Casa Museo shuts Tuesday. Caffè Monte Baldo opens daily and covers the gaps.
- Pickpocketing concentrates in the Casa di Giulietta courtyard — it is the single most crowded spot in the city and bags should be closed and in front of you.
- Book far ahead for Vinitaly, 12–15 April 2026. The whole city's restaurant capacity is taken by the wine trade that week.
