Via del Pratello & the San Luca Portico
Bohemian, unpolished, and loud after dark — Pratello is where students and old-guard Bolognesi share cheap wine on the curb, while three and a half kilometers west the world's longest portico climbs quietly through 666 arches to a hilltop sanctuary.
Who it's for: Budget travelers, craft beer and wine drinkers, night owls who want unpolished nightlife instead of postcard centro bars, and anyone willing to do a real uphill walk (or take a bus partway) for one of Bologna's best views.
Things to know
- Pratello is calm by day (coffee, lunch, browsing) and turns into a loud open-air bar scene after 10pm — decide which version of the street you want before you go.
- The San Luca walk is about 3.8km one-way with real elevation gain after the Arco del Meloncello; budget 60-90 minutes uphill. Bus #20 covers part of the route if you don't want to walk both ways.
- The sanctuary's dome ('cupola') costs €5 and closes for a midday break (roughly 13:30-14:30); the basilica itself is free but closes 30 minutes later March through October.
- Many Pratello kitchens take a few weeks off in August — check social media before making a special trip to a specific trattoria.
- Reserve ahead for sit-down trattorie on weekend nights; the craft beer bars are walk-in only but fill up fast after 9pm.
