Things to know

• The north end of the bay is a different beach from the middle. Water quality, noise and crowding all improve markedly as you walk north towards the Novotel/Fuga end; the stretch directly opposite Bangla is the busiest and the least pleasant.
• Beach loungers are restricted. Thai regulations reserve roughly 10% of the beach for vendor chairs and umbrellas, with the rest meant to stay clear — you can bring your own mat and umbrella but are supposed to use them in the designated zone. Enforcement fluctuates, so take the sign at the access point as the current rule.
• Jet-ski scams are a real and continuing problem here. Phuket authorities have run repeated crackdowns on unlicensed operators at Patong, and disputes over alleged damage remain the classic setup. If you rent, photograph and video the entire craft before you get on it, and only use an operator who will show you a licence.
• Bangla Road closes to traffic around 18:00 and runs until roughly 02:00–04:00 depending on the venue. Before about 21:00 it is fairly tame and family-ish; after that it is not. The touts on the side sois work on commission — a firm no and continued walking is all that is needed.
• Patong is the worst-value eating on the island and it is worth knowing that in advance. The Michelin Guide lists five or six restaurants in and around Patong and every single one of them is fine dining; there is not one Bib Gourmand in Patong itself, while Phuket Old Town has more than a dozen. A trap when checking this yourself: Michelin files Phuket venues by administrative district, not by beach, and Patong sits inside Kathu District — so Patong entries appear under "Kathu", and Kathu District Bib Gourmands (Khrua Jongjit, for one) are inland at Kathu town rather than on the beach. Check the street address, not the district label. If you want the cheap Southern Thai food Phuket is famous for, plan a trip into town.
• Cheap eating in Patong means markets, not restaurants. Banzaan and Malin Plaza are where you get a genuinely good meal for under ฿200 — at Banzaan you can buy raw seafood downstairs and pay a small fee to have it cooked upstairs, which undercuts every seafood restaurant on the beach road.
• Getting around: Grab and Bolt work here and are far cheaper than the tuk-tuks, which are a local cartel and quote fixed, high fares (฿200 for a hop within Patong is normal). The Phuket Smart Bus runs along the west coast from the airport and stops in Patong. A trip to the Old Town is roughly ฿400–600 by app car.
• The Patong Hill road over to Kathu and Phuket Town is genuinely dangerous — steep, tight-cornered and a regular site of brake-failure crashes. If you are on a rented scooter and not confident, take a car.
• May to October is the monsoon and the bay gets serious rip currents. Red flags are not decorative: people drown at Patong every year. If the flags are up, do not swim, regardless of how calm the water looks between sets.
• Freedom Beach and the other southern coves are day trips from Patong, not part of it — longtail boats leave from the southern end of the bay and mostly run December to May.
• Everything is cash-friendly and card-friendly. ATMs charge a ฿220 foreign-card fee per withdrawal, so take out larger amounts less often.
