Centro Histórico (Royal Palace & Gardens)
An 18th-century planned grid town wrapped around a Bourbon palace and four royal gardens that flow into each other along the Tagus. Quiet, low-rise, walkable; on a busy spring Sunday the palace plaza fills, but the Jardín del Príncipe always feels half-empty.
Who it's for: Day-trippers from Madrid; gardens and palace-architecture lovers; anyone in town April–June for strawberry season; Bourbon-history readers.
Things to know
- Royal Palace closed Mondays; €9 adult, free Wed/Sun 3–6pm for EU and Latin American citizens (queue is brutal then).
- Casa del Labrador reopened October 2025 after the Filomena-storm closure — Fri/Sat/Sun/holidays only, advance-booked guided tours of 12 people, separate ticket from the palace.
- Tren de la Fresa runs spring (late Mar–early Jun) and fall (Sep–Oct) Sat/Sun only, plus a few Madrid-region holidays. Buy at trendelafresa.es ahead.
- Strawberry season is roughly mid-April through June. 'Fresas con nata' on dessert menus everywhere; the Saturday street market on Calle Stuart sells them direct.
- August: locals leave, several restaurants close two to three weeks. Casa Pablo closes the full month.
- Gardens are free to enter and stay open until ~8pm summer, ~6:30pm winter; Jardín del Príncipe takes the longest (150 ha).
- The C-3 from Atocha is the right call over driving — palace and gardens are walking-distance from the Aranjuez station, and parking near the palace is messy on weekends.
