Krakovo, Trnovo & the Tivoli Fringe

The old town's green, low-rise, lived-in ring: Krakovo's centuries-old market gardens and fishermen's cottages, leafy Trnovo along the little Gradaščica with its Plečnik church and bridge, the grand sweep of Tivoli Park to the northwest, and — off to the northeast by the station — Metelkova, the graffiti-covered alt-culture squat. Threaded together by Plečnik's southern axis, from his masterpiece library to his own house.

Who it's for: Plečnik pilgrims and architecture lovers; travellers on a second Ljubljana day who want the quieter, more local side; garden-and-park people; anyone after alternative culture, street art and cheap late drinks at Metelkova; museum-goers.

Things to know

  • This is a spread-out neighbourhood, not a single walkable block: Krakovo/Trnovo sit just south of the old town across the Gradaščica, Tivoli is a 10–15 minute walk northwest, and Metelkova is northeast by the train/bus station. Plan it as two or three short hops.
  • Plečnik House is visitable by guided tour only, on the hour, Tuesday–Sunday (closed Mondays) — plan around the tour times.
  • The National and University Library (NUK) is a working library: you can see the staircase and Plečnik hallway free on weekdays, but the famous Main Reading Room is limited (a €5 visit, expanded tourist access in summer and a free Saturday 4pm guided tour). Check NUK's site for current hours.
  • Metelkova is a living squat, not a theme park — it's grittiest and most alive at night, when the bars and clubs open; by day it's quiet and you're there for the street art. Come with a respectful attitude; it's a community space.
  • Metelkova's museum quarter (Ethnographic Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art / MSUM, National Museum branch) shares the former-barracks site but keeps normal daytime museum hours — the opposite rhythm to the squat next door.
  • Most museums here close Mondays and open roughly 10am–6pm; several (MSUM, the Ethnographic Museum) are free on the first Sunday of the month.
  • Krakovo's market gardens are private working allotments — look and photograph from the lanes, don't wander in.
  • Restaurants are sparse and local compared with the Center; Pri Škofu and the Eipprova strip in Trnovo are the main clusters, so book Pri Škofu and don't expect late-night dining outside Metelkova.
