Arashiyama
Kyoto's scenic western edge — a riverside town of cedar-shrouded mountains, the picture-perfect Togetsukyo Bridge, the bamboo grove that's on every Japan poster, and a chain of Sagano-side temples that grow quieter the further you walk from the station. Daytime crowds are brutal; early mornings and evenings are some of the most peaceful hours you'll spend in Kyoto.
Who it's for: First-time Kyoto visitors who want the bamboo-grove image and the Togetsukyo Bridge view. Temple-walkers willing to climb a hill to lose the crowds. Photographers (golden hour on the river is unbeatable). Families (the Monkey Park, the Romantic Train, and the boat ride all work for kids). Foliage chasers in November.
Things to know
- Three different stations serve Arashiyama and they're all called something slightly different: JR Saga-Arashiyama (JR Sagano line from Kyoto Station, 17 min, ¥240, IC card works), Hankyu Arashiyama (Hankyu line from Hankyu Kawaramachi/Karasuma, requires a change at Katsura), and Keifuku Arashiyama (the Randen tram from central Kyoto, slow and quaint). JR is the fastest from Kyoto Station; Keifuku is the most atmospheric.
- The bamboo grove is at its absolute most crowded between 10am and 3pm. Arriving by 7:30am gives you the grove almost to yourself, with soft morning light; after 5pm in summer is the second-best window. The grove is open 24 hours and free.
- Sagano Scenic Railway (Torokko) tickets sell out 1–4 weeks ahead in autumn foliage season (mid-Nov to early Dec) and sakura season. Reserved tickets open online at midnight one month before departure. Same-day standing-room tickets are sold at the station each morning but evaporate by 9am on weekends.
- Mid-November through the first week of December is autumn-foliage peak — the most beautiful time and the most crowded by an order of magnitude. Hotels in Arashiyama and central Kyoto book up 4–6 months ahead for that window.
- Most temples close at 5pm (4:30pm in winter). The area effectively shuts down at sunset; have dinner reservations back in central Kyoto or Gion unless you're staying at one of the riverside ryokan.
- Otagi Nenbutsu-ji raised its admission to ¥1,000 in April 2026 (it was ¥500 for many years); cash only at the gate.
- The Hozugawa River Boat (downstream from Kameoka, 2 hrs, ¥4,100) and the Sagano Scenic Railway (uphill from Arashiyama to Kameoka, 25 min, ¥880) are commonly combined: take the train up, the boat down. Plan a full half-day for the combo. The boat does not run Dec 30–Feb; the train does not run Dec 30 to early March.
