Duomo & Terzo di Città
Siena's artistic and religious core: the striped cathedral, the museum cluster around Piazza del Duomo, and the elegant stretch of Via di Città running down toward the Campo. Quieter and more upmarket than the piazza itself, with the highest concentration of serious sights packed into the smallest area of the city.
Who it's for: Art and architecture travellers who want the Duomo complex done properly rather than rushed. Anyone doing the museum day — Duomo, Baptistery, Crypt, Museo dell'Opera, Santa Maria della Scala are all within five minutes of each other. Shoppers looking for genuine artisan goods over Campo-side souvenirs.
Things to know
- Buy the OPA SI Pass rather than single tickets if visiting more than two Duomo-complex sites — it covers the cathedral, Baptistery, Crypt, Museo dell'Opera, Facciatone and Piccolomini Library.
- The Duomo's inlaid marble floor is only fully uncovered on a seasonal schedule (in 2026: late June–end July, mid-August–late October) — check dates before building a visit around it.
- Pinacoteca Nazionale is closed for renovation as of early 2026 with no confirmed reopening date; some works have moved to Palazzo Chigi Piccolomini alla Postierla and nearby churches.
- Via San Pietro, just south of the Pinacoteca, is the best 'walk two streets over' move for non-touristy restaurants near the Duomo.
- This zone has essentially no nightlife or park space — plan those elsewhere and treat this as a daytime, museum-focused stretch.
