Thissío & Kerameikós
The calm side of the ancient city. A wide marble promenade curves round the west flank of the Acropolis with the Ancient Agora on one side and a row of café terraces on the other, all of them looking straight at the rock. Behind it the streets go quiet fast — a middle-class residential neighbourhood of low buildings and quiet squares — and to the northwest the ground opens into Kerameikós, the ancient cemetery, which is the greenest and strangest archaeological site in Athens. Two pine-covered hills rise to the south with the best free views in the city on top of them.
Who it's for: People who want the ancient city without the crush. Walkers — this is the end of the archaeological promenade and the start of the hills. Sunset chasers: Filopáppou and the Pnyx are the two best free viewpoints in Athens and both are here. Anyone who wants to sit outside with a coffee and look at the Parthenon for two hours without paying rooftop prices. Photographers.
Things to know
- Individual archaeological site tickets replaced the old combined ticket on 1 April 2025. Budget for each site separately and buy on hhticket.gr — the Ancient Agora is in the top pricing tier at around €20, Kerameikós is cheaper, and sources still quoting the €30 five-day combo are out of date.
- The Ancient Agora ticket includes the Temple of Hephaestus and the museum in the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos. Allow ninety minutes, not thirty.
- Filopáppou Hill is free, always open and unfenced. It is also unlit — go up for sunset by all means, but bring a phone torch for the way down and don't take the small side paths in the dark.
- Apostólou Pávlou's café terraces all face the Acropolis and all charge for it. Prices drop noticeably one street back on Iraklidón and again in the residential streets behind.
- Cine Thisío, the open-air cinema under the Acropolis, runs roughly late April to late October with screenings around 9pm and 11pm. There are no reservations — turn up 30 minutes early. Tickets are around €9 and films are shown in the original language with Greek subtitles.
- The Benaki Museum of Islamic Art closes completely for a summer break — in 2026 from 30 July to 8 October — and is shut Monday to Wednesday the rest of the year. Check before you build a day around it.
- Kerameikós is the best site in Athens for shade and quiet: the Eridanos river runs through it, there are turtles and terrapins, and it is often nearly empty even in August.
- The Pnyx, where the Athenian assembly met, is free and unfenced on the hill above the Agora. There is no ticket booth and almost never anybody there.
