Munich's brain: the grid of streets north-west of the Altstadt that holds the LMU and TU campuses, the Kunstareal museum cluster, and the country's most concentrated square kilometre of Nazi-era history — all of it wrapped around a student quarter of cheap Korean counters, specialty-coffee bars and 120-year-old Kneipen. Big architecture, low prices, no beer-hall theatre.

Who it's for: Anyone doing museums seriously — the Kunstareal is a full day and then some. Travelers who want Munich's difficult 20th-century history told properly (NS-Dokumentationszentrum, Königsplatz, the White Rose memorial). Budget eaters, since the student population keeps a whole grid of €8–12 lunches alive. Coffee people. Anyone who found the Altstadt exhausting.

Things to know

  • Sunday is €1 day at all the Bavarian state museums — Alte Pinakothek, Pinakothek der Moderne, Brandhorst, Glyptothek, Antikensammlungen and the Egyptian Museum all drop to €1. It is the single best deal in Munich and everyone knows it, so go at opening or accept the crowds. Special exhibitions are excluded.
  • Almost every museum here closes on Monday. The exceptions that save a Monday are the NS-Dokumentationszentrum (closed Mondays too, but open on Mondays that are public holidays) and simply walking Königsplatz, Ludwigstraße and the Siegestor, which are free and always open.
  • The Neue Pinakothek is closed for renovation until 2029. Its 19th-century highlights are shown in the east wing of the Alte Pinakothek and at the Sammlung Schack in Lehel — don't turn up at the empty building.
  • A €12 combined day ticket covers the Pinakotheken and Brandhorst; the Glyptothek and Antikensammlungen share their own €20 annual ticket for both houses. Under-18s are free everywhere.
  • The Kunstareal is genuinely too big for one day. Two half-days beats one death march: Old Masters in one block, modern/design in another.
  • Cash still matters. Small Kneipen, the imbiss counters on Amalienstraße and Türkenstraße, and beer-garden self-service lines are frequently cash-only or cash-preferred. Carry €30–40 in small notes.
  • The Löwenbräukeller beer garden has a Selbstbedienung section where, under a Bavarian decree dating to 1812, you may bring your own food and buy only the beer. Bring bread, cheese and a radish and you've halved the bill.
  • The Alter Botanischer Garten spent years as a drug and crime hotspot. The city banned alcohol, cannabis and weapons in the park in January 2025 and it has visibly improved, but it is still not a park to linger in after dark.
  • U2 Königsplatz for the Nazi-era sites, U2 Theresienstraße for the Pinakotheken, U3/U6 Universität for the student quarter and the White Rose memorial. Tram 27/28 along Barer Straße links the lot.
  • August is the dead month: the students are gone and a noticeable share of the small Kneipen and lunch counters take their annual Betriebsferien. Check before you walk across town for one.
