Haidhausen

Munich's most convincing 'village inside the city' — a low-rise former clay-diggers' quarter on the high east bank of the Isar that grew a Parisian street grid on top of it. Old Wirtshäuser and cobbled Herberg cottages on one side, French bistros, wine bars and Gründerzeit squares on the other.

Who it's for: Repeat visitors who've done the Altstadt and want the version of Munich locals actually live in. Couples, food travelers, architecture and design people, anyone who'd rather sit in a neighborhood beer garden than the Hofbräuhaus. Families — the squares are green and traffic-calmed.

Things to know

  • The Gasteig — Munich's big concert hall on Rosenheimer Straße and the reason many guidebooks send you here — is CLOSED. Its interim use ends in autumn 2026, the gut renovation starts spring 2027, and the city's own schedule points at mid-2033. The Philharmonic plays at Gasteig HP8 in Sendling instead.
  • The historic Wiener Markt is being rebuilt. An interim market of six stalls opened around the Fischerbuberl fountain on 25 April 2026 and runs through the works into 2027. Market hours Mon–Fri to 6pm, Sat to noon, closed Sundays and holidays.
  • Two U-Bahn stops matter: Max-Weber-Platz (U4/U5, for Wiener Platz and the old village) and Ostbahnhof (U5/S-Bahn, for the Franzosenviertel and Werksviertel). Rosenheimer Platz (S-Bahn) drops you at the Isar end. From Marienplatz it's about 10 minutes.
  • Small owner-run places here close on days you won't expect — several of the best are shut Sunday and Monday, and the French bistros usually take a long afternoon break. Check before you walk over.
  • Cash still matters more than it should. Boazn (old-school corner pubs), the market stalls and some cafés are cash-only or have card minimums. Carry €20–40 in small notes.
  • It's a real residential neighborhood: courtyards and the quiet Herberg lanes off Preysingstraße are people's homes. Photograph the facades, not through the windows.
  • Walking to the centre is genuinely pleasant — cross the Ludwigsbrücke or Maximiliansbrücke and you're at the Isarinsel and the Altstadt in 15 minutes. Don't take a taxi within Haidhausen.
  • Deutsches Museum sits on the island just across the river, not in Haidhausen — but it's a 10-minute walk from Wiener Platz and pairs naturally with a beer garden afternoon.
