Karlín

Prague's best eating district, and it exists because the river destroyed it. A 19th-century industrial suburb of grid streets and old factories that took two metres of water in the 2002 flood, was rebuilt with money and taste, and is now where the city's serious cooking, specialty coffee and small breweries have concentrated. Ten minutes from Old Town Square and almost nobody visiting Prague goes there.

Who it's for: Anyone who cares about food and coffee — the concentration here is the highest in the city and the prices are ordinary. Breakfast people especially; Karlín does breakfast better than anywhere else in Prague. Design and architecture types, for the contrast between restored 1840s blocks and new office buildings. Walkers, for the riverside and the tunnel up to Vítkov. People who have done the sights and want a day that is just a good day.

Things to know

  • Karlín is the best breakfast in Prague and it is not close. Eska, Můj šálek kávy, Ema, Typika and Etapa are all within a few hundred metres of each other and all open early.
  • Look for the 2002 flood marks on building walls — a line and a date, often two metres above the pavement. They explain the entire district.
  • The pedestrian tunnel under Vítkov connects Karlín to Žižkov in about 300 metres and saves a steep climb. Cyclists come through fast and ignore the dismount sign.
  • It is one metro stop from the centre — Florenc or Křižíkova on line B — or a fifteen-minute walk along the river from the Old Town.
  • Kasárna Karlín, the cultural centre in a former barracks, was ordered closed by the building authority in June 2024 and reopened its COURTYARD in May 2025; a March 2026 agreement has secured its cultural use with full reopening expected. The outdoor operation runs; indoor spaces have been limited. Check before you plan an evening there.
  • Dva kohouti serves no food at all — there are usually food trucks in the courtyard, and the taproom actively encourages you to bring food in from nearby.
  • This is an office district as well as a residential one, so lunch service between 12:00 and 13:30 is genuinely busy and the good places fill. Eat at 11:30 or after 14:00.
  • Kitchens close early by European standards and the district is quiet on Sunday evenings. Do not plan a late dinner here without checking.
  • The riverside path along the Karlín embankment runs to Holešovice one way and the Old Town the other, and is the pleasantest walking route out of the district.
